Product Description:

Software is the essential enabler for the new economy and science. It creates new markets and new directions for a more reliable, flexible, and robust society. It empowers the exploration of our world in ever more depth. However, software often falls short behind our expectations. Current software methodologies, tools, and techniques remain expensive and not yet reliable for a highly changeable and evolutionary market. Many approaches have been proven only as case-by-case oriented methods. This book presents a number of new trends and theories in the direction in which we believe software science and engineering may develop to transform the role of software and science in tomorrow’s information society. This book is an attempt to capture the essence of a new state of art in software science and its supporting technology. The book also aims at identifying the challenges such a technology has to master. One example that is challenged is Lyee methodology as a new Japanese emerged software methodology that has been patented in several countries in Europe, Asia, and America. But it is still in its early stage of emerging as a new software style. This series will also contribute to elaborate on such new trends and related academic research studies and development.

Book Description:

This rigorous but brilliantly lucid book presents a self-contained treatment of modern economic dynamics. Stokey, Lucas, and Prescott develop the basic methods of recursive analysis and illustrate the many areas where they can usefully be applied.

After presenting an overview of the recursive approach, the authors develop economic applications for deterministic dynamic programming and the stability theory of first-order difference equations. They then treat stochastic dynamic programming and the convergence theory of discrete-time Markov processes, illustrating each with additional economic applications. They also derive a strong law of large numbers for Markov processes. Finally, they present the two fundamental theorems of welfare economics and show how to apply the methods developed earlier to general equilibrium systems.

The authors go on to apply their methods to many areas of economics. Models of firm and industry investment, household consumption behavior, long-run growth, capital accumulation, job search, job matching, inventory behavior, asset pricing, and money demand are among those they use to show how predictions can he made about individual and social behavior. Researchers and graduate students in economic theory will find this book essential.

Acclaimed winner of the William Whitehead Memorial Award for a lifetime's contribution to gay and lesbian literature, Samuel R. Delany wrote Hogg three decades ago. Since then it has been one of America's most famous 'unpublishable' novels. The subject matter of Hogg is our culture of sexual violence and degeneration. Delany explores his disturbing protagonist Hogg on his own turf--rape, pederasty, sexual excess--exposing an area of violence and sexual abuse from the inside. As such, it is a brave book.

In her first novel, award-winning Indian screenwriter Arundhati Roy conjures a whoosh of wordplay that rises from the pages like a brilliant jazz improvisation. The God of Small Things is nominally the story of young twins Rahel and Estha and the rest of their family, but the book feels like a million stories spinning out indefinitely; it is the product of a genius child-mind that takes everything in and transforms it in an alchemy of poetry. The God of Small Things is at once exotic and familiar to the Western reader, written in an English that's completely new and invigorated by the Asian Indian influences of culture and language.

Bestselling psychic Sylvia Browne offers a detailed account of life in heaven in Life on the Other Side. Readers should be warned that it takes a huge leap of faith to follow this celebrity psychic across the chasm of doubt to the other side. In her opening chapters she explains that she is like the young boy in the movie The Sixth Sense--she sees dead people. When she was a child, these spirits came into her room at night and disappeared when a light went on. "To this day I can't sleep in a completely dark room, because the minute I try it the room starts filling up," she writes. "As a child, it was scary. As an adult, it's just annoying..."

Once she establishes her lengthy connections to life after death (including conversations with a spirit guide named Francine and her own near-death experience), Browne launches into life in the fourth dimension. In a chapter titled "After the Tunnel, Arriving on the Other Side," Browne explains that newcomers pass through a "hall of wisdom" and then review their most recent life through a "scanning machine." In the chapter "Beyond the Entrance," Brown claims that spirits live in whatever kind of home they've longed for, or they recreate a favorite home from earth. Plus, "the more spiritually advanced we become, the more physical beauty we're given, as a badge of our progress and hard work." Sex is known as "merging" and does not require birth control or any commitments of exclusivity. These kinds of glowing accounts of the other side cause skeptics to snicker, believers to feel comforted, and thousands of fans to keep on buying her books. --Gail Hudson

Have the French always enjoyed their renowned cuisine? When did Russians begin to eat pirogi? What was the first Indonesian spice to be cultivated elsewhere in the world? Questions such as these make for good Jeopardy material, but they're far from trivial--just ask anyone with a passion for good food and a curiosity for where that food originated. That person will know instinctively that the best way to approach a culture--and, indeed, the human animal--is through the stomach. For this individual, The Cambridge World History of Food will be something of a bible, and the best of gifts.

A massive scholarly tome in two volumes and more than 2,000 pages, the CWHF encompasses a wealth of learning that touches on nearly every aspect of human life. (It also reveals the answers to the three earlier questions: No, French cuisine as we know it is a 19th-century development; in the 16th century, following the conquest of the Volga Tatar; ginger, in colonial Mexico.) Thoroughly researched and highly accessible despite its formidable layout, the set addresses a groaning board of topics past and present, from the diet of prehistoric humans to the role of iron in combating disease; from the domestication of animals to the spread of once-isolated ethnic cuisines in a fast-globalizing world. Of greatest interest to general readers is its concluding section--a dictionary of the world's food plants, which gives brief accounts of items both common and exotic, from abalong to Zuttano avocado.

The product of seven years of research, writing, and editing on the part of more than 200 authors, The Cambridge World History of Food promises to become a standard reference for social scientists, economists, nutritionists, and other scholars--and for cooks and diners seeking to deepen their knowledge of the materials they use and consume. --Gregory McNamee

Review:

American Indian Medicine

American Indian Medicine written by Virgil J. Vogel is a compilation of what the American Indian used for medicine to aid in the treatment of disease.

This book is NOT a step by step process pharmacopoeia with all the weights and preparation steps but is a good general book on what was used. Granted the author states this in his preface and he is not a medical practioner, but what he has given us is history of Indian Medicine in the Americas.

Native American Medicine has long intrigud me and the collection of the herbs, roots, bark, and leaves of plants is what pharmacognsy was to the settlers . This book has been divided into eight sections with a bibliography that helps the reader in further study.

The chapters are as follows:

What the red man gave us
Indian theories of disease and shamanistic practices.
Early observation of white man on indian medicine.

I was really looking forward to reading this based on reviews and descriptions of it. I had just read other books like _Bury_My_Heart_at_Wounded_Knee, _The_Invasion_of_America, and _American_Holocaust. But i was pretty disappointed by this book.
I hope her other books are better, but i'd would suggest you not spend your money on this one.

Review:

Why Ashida Kim is Not Fake

Ashida Kim, criticized for his name non public lineage and numerous other stuff... So it makes him a fake? Lineage is both meaningless and paramount. Any individual can make a claim without proof. Lineage is to verify that original teachings spiritual and martial come from experience and acccomplishment in real life. The trust that the disciple has in the master after proper evaluation is that if he listens to the master he will be guided correctly along a path he may not be able to achieve himself. Over generations each disciple that attains mastery, learning all he can, can authoritatively add or change the art based on changing needs and conditions. The knowledge of the art may grow, degenerate, change and or be restored. This process was the original impulse behind the ninja clans. Many of the fighting styles, techniques and spiritual teachings of the ninja came from china directly including kung fu teachings as well as Esoteric Buddhism (Vajrayana) and Taoism (especially Taoist Alchemy). In addition to "historical" evidence about these teachings is the actual experience of being a martial disciple. Beyond "kata" and "rank" is the teaching in the manner of an apprenticeship of one person directly to another. How to stand how to breath, develop force and fearlessness, how to fight for real in a life or death street confrontation. Mangajin Issues 1 - 50

"If you want to read authentic Japanese comics in the original Japanese, if you want to get an inside look at Japanese pop culture, if you want to learn the Japanese language as it's really spoken -- this is the magazine for you."

"The Beginnings of Mangajin

The concept of Mangajin magazine began to take shape in 1988. Vaughan Simmons, a businessman and translator who had lived and worked in Japan for 10 years, started developing prototypes of a magazine that would feature Japanese pop culture in a format combining entertainment and language-learning.

Simmons's background included 4 years working for George Fields (author of Gucci on the Ginza, From Bonsai to Levis, and noted authority on the Japanese as consumers) at a consumer market research firm in Japan (ASI Market Research, now AC Neilsen Customized Japan). Working with clients like Nestle, Vicks, KFC, and MacDonalds, he saw that American and European companies could be very successful in Japan if they just did their homework and learned a little about the Japanese consumer (= Japanese people). This was part of the motivation for starting Mangajin.

At the time, the trade situation between the US and Japan was like a bad tennis match. The US just couldn't seem to hit the ball and it was getting embarrassing, even to the Japanese. Simmons felt that part of the problem was the fact that Americans just didn't know very much about Japan.

There was clearly a need for new sources of information about Japan. Most of the information available on Japan was from Japanese sources. Some of it had clearly been "whitewashed" for foreign consumption and some of it seemed to suffer from the "fish describing water" syndrome; the Japanese writer or editor didn't have a feel for what was interesting to the foreign reader. Or, the most offensive of all was the writer who glossed over key points because he or she didn't think the non-Japanese reader could understand them. Usually, the problem was that the writer didn't know how to explain them in terms of another cultural vocabulary.

Also, about this time, Japanese language education, especially at the college level, was really taking off, and learning Japanese was considered a smart career move. It looked like Japan Inc. was about to take over the world and people wanted to be able to talk to their new bosses. (Mangajin wasn't catering to that crowd, however; it's goal was to be a part of turning the situation around. )

From his market research days, Simmons realized that to really understand the Japanese people, you had to at least have some insights into the language, and the converse was also true. So something that combined "culture" and language would be ideal. And as for the real "culture," forget about what they say, look at what they buy -- current pop culture provides the best indication of what Japanese people are really interested in. (Of course, it's also true that modern pop culture frequently contains references to "classical" culture.)..."

Book Description:

A guide to the advanced practice of Inner Alchemy, which brings the physical body into balance with the energy body

• Presents the second level of Inner Alchemy practices that use the eight forces of the pakua (bagwa) to collect, gather, and condense chi in the body

• Explains how to balance negative emotional energy with positive energy to detoxify, nourish, and integrate the physical and the energy body with the forces of nature

• Shows how to collect and channel the greater energies of the stars and planets to create unity between what is above and below

Cosmic Fusion is an advanced level of Inner Alchemy that teaches how to bring the physical body into balance with the energy body--a necessary prerequisite for the formation of the universal body, the pearl of compassion that is one with Original Creation and the Universal Tao. Cosmic Fusion works with the expression of the eight pakua (bagwa) of Chinese cosmology, through which all creation is divided and given form, nature, and definition.

Cosmic Fusion exercises establish the spiritual body firmly in the lower abdomen, where chi energy is gathered and distributed to all parts of the body--and into all creation. The fully illustrated exercises in this book also show how to collect and channel the greater energies of the stars and planets. By “fusing” all these different energies together, a harmonious whole is created, a unity of what is above and below. As heavenly and earthly forces are brought into balance, the life perfectly suited to the practitioner manifests, allowing the spirit body to prepare to move into worlds beyond--and back.

How To Change Yourself (Double Your Dating Series)

How To Change Yourself A Man’s Guide To Inner Change, Reaching Goals, And Making Things Happen
David DeAngelo
Copyright 2004, All Rights Reserved

1. Why YOU Need to be the One to Change
You’re the Only One Who Really Cares about Your Success
No one cares like you do, except perhaps your mom, and she
wants you to be a good wus-, I mean, hus-band. If you really want
success, you must first take full responsibility for your results. No one
else is ever going to give you success in life.
In fact, others often would rather see you fail. Subconsciously,
even most people are pleased by your failures. You may be lucky to
find a handful of true friends, but otherwise you’re the only one who
cares about what happens in your life.
Take personal responsibility! Accept that you’re the only one to
make success happen, that you’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish
your goals, and don’t accept from yourself any excuses for failure

  • Book Description:

This book opens up three new topics in modern Chinese literary history: the intimate lives of Lu Xun and Xu Guangping as a couple; real and imagined love-letters in modern Chinese literature; and concepts of privacy in China. The scandalous affair between modern China's greatest writer and his former student is revealed in their letters to each other between 1925 and 1929. Publication of the letters in a heavily edited version in 1933 was intended partly to profit from a current trend for literary couples to publish their private letters, but another reason was to assert control over their love story, taking it away from the gossip-mongers. The biographies in Part I, based on the unedited letters, reveal such hitherto neglected information as Xu Guangping's early tendencies towards lesbianism; her gender reversal games and Lu Xun's willing participation in them; Xu Guangping's two early attempts at suicide; and Lu Xun's attempts to play down Xu Guangping's political activism and to impress readers with his own militancy. Part II shows how Lu Xun chose to publish their edited letters in the context of current Chinese epistolary fiction and love-letters published by their authors. Part III provides unique evidence on the nature of privacy in modern China through a comparison between the unedited and edited correspondence. Textual evidence shows their intimate secrets about their affairs, their bodies, and their domestic lives; their fear of gossip; their longing for a secluded life together; and their ambivalent attitudes towards the traditional conflict between public service and private or selfish interests. Although it has sometimes been claimed that Chinese culture lacks a sense of privacy, this study reveals the contents, functions, and values of privacy in the early twentieth century.

Having previously dissected the factual inaccuracies of a single bellicose talk show host in Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, Al Franken takes his fight to a larger foe: President George W. Bush, the Bush Administration, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, and scores of other conservatives whom, he says, are playing loose with the facts. It's a lot of ground to cover, as evidenced by the 43 chapters in Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, but the results are often entertaining and insightful. Franken occupies a unique place in the modern political dialogue as perhaps the media's only comedy writer and performer who is also a Harvard fellow as well as a liberal political commentator. This unique and vaguely lonely position lends a charming quixotic quality to adventures such as a tense encounter with the Fox News staff at the National Press Club, a challenge to fisticuffs with National Review Editor Rich Lowry, and an oddly sweet admissions visit to ultra-conservative Bob Jones University (with a young research assistant posing as his son when Franken's real-life son refuses to participate in the charade). Less useful are comic book dramatizations of "Supply Side Jesus" and a fictitious Vietnam War story featuring the numerous righties who, Franken intimates, improperly avoided service. And Franken's criticisms of conservative talk show hosts Sean Hannity, O'Reilly, and columnist Coulter, while admirable in their attention to detail, fail to shed much new light on people who have built careers on broad arguments and relentless self-aggrandizement. But Franken is at his best, and most compellingly readable, when he backs off the wackiness and the personal grudges and writes about more personal matters such as the political circus surrounding the memorial service of the late Senator Paul Wellstone. But even on these more serious topics, Franken's wit is still present and, in fact, grows sharper. In a time when much political discourse is composed of rage and shouting, it's refreshing that Al Franken is able to shout in a witty manner. --John Moe

Review:

Good stuff for a great game!

It has a similar layout to White Wolf's other Player's Guidebooks. New Merits and Traits (Internet Savvy, Uneducated) new classes (the Hermit and the Wayward) and an absolute ton of ideas on how to create and play an average human being (a surprisingly difficult task at times).

I have most of the stuff that has been put out for Hunter so far, and this would come right after the Survival Guide in order of usefulness and game expansion. The Hermit class is EXTREMELY interesting (they hear voices from the Messengers constantly) and the Merits/Flaws really help to round out a character (there's a fair bit more than just the standard merits/flaws that find their way into all the player's guides).

The roleplaying tips and ideas are realy nice, especially concerning what types of people are likely to pick up a given creed. There are some interesting rules presented on changing creeds as well (you were an innocent, but you've seen enough, etc.) which make good sense. A whole section on Bystanders is a nice addition as well (they hint that many Bystanders are failed Hunters - ones who heard the call but failed to act).

There's more here than I can lay down, suffice it to say if you've picked up the main book and want to delve deeper into the roleplaying of Hunter this is definetly a worthwhile purchase.
