  • Book Description:

"The Innermost Kernel" recounts the physicist and Nobel Laureate Wolfgang Pauli and his interest in Jungian psychology, philosophy and western world-view. It is also an exploration of the intellectual setting and context of Pauli's thinking, which has its starting point in the cultural and intellectual climate of fin-de-siècle Europe. As a contribution to the general history of quantum physics this study has a special focus on the psychological and philosophical issues discussed by physicists belonging to the Copenhagen school. The work is mainly based on the correspondence of the principle characters and explores some of the central issues discussed there, as for instance the subject-object relation, complementarity, the relation of conscious and unconscious, the process underlying concept-formation, the psychology of scientific discovery, the symbolic world of alchemy, the theories of archetypes and of synchronicity. Ultimately this book is about a remarkable scientist searching for a new understanding of the interrelatedness of man and world.

  • Book Description:

Erotic Journeys is a fascinating, revealing, and respectful examination of the romantic relationships and sex lives of the fastest-growing minority group in the nation. In a series of in-depth interviews, Gloria González-López investigates the ways in which sixty heterosexual Mexican women and men living in Los Angeles reinvent their sex lives as part of their immigration and settlement experiences. Defying a broad spectrum of preconceived notions, these immigrants confirm in their vivid narratives that sexuality--far from being culturally determined--is fluid and complex.
González-López explains that these Mexicans enter the United States with particular sexual ideologies and practices that, while diverse, are regulated by family ethics and regional patriarchies. After migration, a range of factors--including employment, the risks and dangers of resettlement, social networking with other immigrants, and the new demands of a fast-paced industrialized metropolis--begin to transform the immigrants' intimate lives in deep and unexpected ways. The remarkably candid interviews show that these men and women are skillful negotiating agents of their own sexuality. The author's incisive analysis of their narratives sets the stage for a nuanced and compelling understanding of this complex topic and its many social implications.

  • Book Description:
Alarmingly, heroin is growing in popularity amongst young people. This is despite the fact that it is - more than any other drug - associated with failure, death, misery and poverty. This book explores why people are tempted by heroin and how globalization has played a key role in increasing the number of abusers.

Rather than offer lofty and abstract theories on addiction, the author grounds his study firmly in the day-to-day lives of heroin users themselves. Norrköping in Sweden is a mid-sized former industrial city like countless others throughout the world. It has suffered high unemployment as a result of its rapid decline as a hub of commerce. Once well known for housing the giant telecommunications company Ericsson, it sadly gains more notoriety today through its associations with heroin, which continues to be the drug of choice for Norrköping’s young people. Through privileged access to users themselves, Lalander is able to show us the real motivations and lifestyle choices behind addiction. Personal testimonies candidly expose the underground activities of a thriving subculture and spark vexing questions as to why these young people choose to flirt with fatality. What media representations influence heroin users? Is this phenomenon the inevitable by-product of modern life? What are the root causes at play?

Lalander’s in-depth investigation overturns many of the stereotypes associated with heroin use. Accessible and gripping, Hooked on Heroin brings a disturbing reality closer to home and shows how global and local practices are intimately linked.

When it comes to creating the life you want, Shakti Gawain literally wrote the book. Now considered a classic, Creative Visualization teaches readers how to use their imaginations to manifest their deepest desires. In a straight-talking narrative, Gawain uses the first part to cover the basics, with chapters such as "How to Visualize," "Affirmations," and "Creative Visualization Only Works for the Good." Once she shows readers how visualization actually works, Gawain moves on to loftier discussions, such as "Contacting Your Higher Self," "Meeting Your Guide," "Setting Goals," and "Treasure Maps."

Fear not; this isn't a spiritual-lightweight book for people with a severe case of the "gimmes." Gawain has her priorities in the right place, and she cautions readers that creative visualization will not serve greed or shallow-minded thinking. For example, she discourages the cycle of trying to have more money, so you can do what you want in life, so you will be happier. "The way it actually works is the reverse," she explains. "You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want." Yet she also writes an excellent chapter on letting go of the misguided guilt that inhibits readers from becoming truly prosperous. --Gail Hudson

    Excellent Resource

This is an interesting story. It is a story of a lawyer who appears to have it all - the corner office, the life style, the cars, women, ... Then he gives it all up and tours the East. While there he comes across this strange monk and monastery. He comes to live life in a much different way. Yet he is challenged by the monk who has trained him to go back home and share the message he has learnt, with the West. Julian, our main character, returns to his old law firm and to his prot?g? John. He tells him a parable; then the rest of the book explains the parable and how it relates to different aspects of our lives. The parable is rather simple and a little strange but as it is explained you will never forget it. Read it to find out how a garden, lighthouse, sumo wrestler, pink wire cable, stopwatch, roses and a winding path of diamonds are symbols of timeless principles and virtues by which to live your life. This book could help raise the quality of your life to a new level.

Causal mapping is a tool that enables you to make sense of challenging situations so that you can get more out of them. A causal map is a word and arrow diagram in which ideas and actions are causally linked with one another through the use of arrows. Typically, only specialists such as physical or social scientists and operations researchers know about causal mapping and the tool is therefore not widely known or its broad applicability understood. Until now there has been no guidance available on how to make use of the tool for more general purposes. This book lets managers understand the theory and practice of causal mapping in layman's terms for use in both individual and group settings. It shows managers how to develop and use action-oriented strategy maps and logic models in business decision making. The authors show how causal mapping can be used as a tool to make sense of challenging situations and develop effective business responses.

In this book polymath William Ian Miller probes one of the dirty little secrets of humanity: that we are all faking it much more than anyone would care to admit. He writes with wit and wisdom about the vain anxiety of being exposed as frauds in our professions, cads in our loves, and hypocrites to our creeds. He finds, however, that we are more than mere fools for wanting so badly to look good to ourselves and others. Sometimes, when we are faking it, our vanity leads to virtue, and we actually achieve something worthy of esteem and praise William Ian Miller is the Thomas G. Long Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He has also taught at Harvard, Yale, Chicago, and the Universities of Bergen and Tel Aviv. What is terror? What are its roots and its results -- and what part does it play in human experience and history? This volume offers a number of timely and original anthropological insights into the ways in which acts of terror -- and reactions to those acts -- impact on the lives of virtually everyone in the world today, as perpetrators, victims or witnesses.

As the contributors to this volume demonstrate, what we have come to regard as acts of terror -- whether politically motivated, or state-sanctioned -- have assumed many different forms and provoked widely differing responses throughout the world.

At a deeper level, the contributors explore the work of the imagination in extreme contexts of danger, such as those of terror and terrorism. By stressing the role of the imagination, and its role in amplifying the effects of experience, this collection brings together a coherent set of analyses that offer innovative and unexpected ways of understanding a major global problem of contemporary life.

Professor Andrew Strathern and Dr Pamela J. Stewart are long-term research collaborators in the Department of Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh, USA, carrying out research in the Pacific, Asia and Europe. Dr Neil Whitehead is Professor of Anthropology and Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA.

  • Book Description:

This is an innovative study of digital culture, in particular the politics of the emerging digital culture, and especially the cultural and political dimensions of network technologies. Across the cybercultural landscape of mailing lists, discussion groups, e-zines and the digital press, it sees the emergence of a new collective political subject, a networked intelligence.

The author touches on key concepts and debates in cultural theory and cultural politics, and makes use of student-friendly examples including cyberfeminism, activism and cyberorganising on the net - such as J18, Seattle, and the anti-war movement.

Terranova presents a sophisticated argument about what the new forms of communication and organisation mean for politics, democracy, and identity. The book draws on online debates about labour, self-organisation, virtual activism, and future identities to outline some of the features of current societies of control (following Hardt and Negri) and the political answers that are being formulated within these new digital cultures.

  • Book Description:

What does "creativity" mean - and does it have both a political and a cultural dimension? The contributors to this volume reexamine the interconnectedness of culture and creativity in an increasingly hybrid world. They argue that while many of the old certainties about high culture and artistic canons may now be disintegrating, culture and creativity themselves are still very much a reflection of social processes involving power and the control of resources.

Looking at the ways in which "creativity" is used more generally in the social sciences, the contributors reveal the importance of creativity, and its links with cultural change, in challenging the norm, offering alternative world views, suggesting strategies of resistance or accommodation in times of uncertainty, diffusion, migration and change, in the transition from modernity to post modernity.

Examples are taken from across the globe, covering a wide range of cultures. Case studies include youth subcultures in Europe; revolutionary theater in the Brazilian candomblé dance; the role of memory in mythology among the Pukapukan of Polynesia; the evolution of football and polo in Argentina; gender relations in Algerian raï music, employment strategies in the commodification of pharmaceuticals in Uganda; the notion of authenticity in artistic movements in Zanzibar; traditional and modern practices of the Lio in Indonesia; and kula exchange and social movements in Trobriand Island in the Pacific

  • Book Description:

The advent of the twentieth century saw an incredible advance in scientific technology. By the inter-war period of the 1920s and early 1930s cars, planes and radios were a part of everyday life, and science became a popular cult for a new age. Faith in science surged amidst an atmosphere of intellectual and social crisis.

Jo-Anne Pemberton looks in detail at the rhetoric used by the political classes of the time that propagated a vision of a new global unity, and reveals the way in which those same metaphors and imagery are used today in the rhetoric of globalization. Then, as now, the idea of "one world" was challenged by notions of manyness and multiplicity.

Drawing parallels between then and now, "Global Metaphors" reveals how much of the appeal of globalization rhetoric relies on shimmering technological fantasies about the future. Today this also incorporates images of the environment which are used to reinforce the idea of an interconnected world. While this seductive imagery is impelled at one level by the romance of scientific invention, Pemberton reveals the way in which it is also used to cement particular political, economic and cultural interests as universal goods. Arguing that our current debate about globalization is in effect a rerun of the same debate from the inter-war period, she explores why globalist thinking gains currency at particular moments in history, and looks beyond this to the interests, values and cultural biases it belies.

The book explores many similarities between early twentieth century discussions of modernity and late twentieth century debates about post modernity

The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia

Michael Gray, The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia
Contniuum | 0826469337 | 2006 | 6.5 MB | PDF | 736 pages

Bob Dylan’s reach is too wide, too deep and too long for any book about him to cover it all. He’s a senior citizen. His career spans 45 years of American history! Naturally, though, it is Bob Dylan’s art that is the heart of the book: it is his art that has got inside our heads, has changed the world around us and justifies his being paid so much attention. If in 100 years’ time Dylan’s art goes unheard and discounted, well, in 200 years’ time it may bounce back. If not, The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia might help some scholar of the future to sift through the rusted nuts

Japanese Brush Painting

Japanese Brush Painting
Hacker Art Books | ISBN 9990385696 | 1988-06 | PDF | 32 pages | 26 MB

Japanese brush painting is a relatively recent development and emerged out of the Buddhist schools of calligraphy (Shodo). The ancient art of Japanese brush painting, or sumi-e, is strikingly beautiful, simple and pure, yet strong and resonant. Closely related to Zen philosophy, the art of sumi-e is executed with black ink on white rice paper using bamboo brushes. Subjects in Japanese brush painting include landscapes, flowers, or animals, anything that suggests a closeness to the natural world.

Judgment and Planning in Chess

Judgment and Planning in Chess
Random House Puzzles & Games (1980-01-12) | ISBN: 0679143254 | 200 Pages | 5.6 MB | PDF

Judgment And Planning In Chess focuses on that crucial point in the chess game -- eight or so moves into the game -- where the opening development breaks off and the middle game begins. This is precisely the part of the game that falls between opening books and middle-game books. Dr. Euwe studies a number of orthodox openings and positions from the point where the opening stage has come to an end. He describes the characteristics of the position reached, shows why one or the other side stands better, and gives a practical demonstration of the means by which the game can be brought to its logical conclusion.

"Written with all the expository power for which the ex-champion is famous" (Times Literary Supplement), this well-known book is regarded as one of the standard manuals for developing players.

Action Chess: Purdy's 24 Hours Opening Repertoire
Thinkers' Press (1999-05) | ISBN: 0938650793 | 269 Pages | 2.43 MB | DJVU

I think this is a good book. I think some of the people who write these reviews are not the intended audience. I don't think this book was written for expert players. It's written for people who are beginners and want to start playing the game without being crushed in the opening. This book won't cause you win every game. I don't think that's possible with a 24 hour repertiore. However, it will give you some good ideas to think about and will get through most games with a playable position. Most opening books have a ton of variations and very little explanation. Purdy is a great chess teacher and explains all the main ideas. It's true that these openings may not be the best according to modern theory. However, this book was intended as 24 hour repertiore for players rated 1900 and under. I think it's good in that respect.

American Chess Promotions(1984) | ISBN: 0713408995 | 160 Pages | 6.6 MB | PDF

The Sicilian defence is the most popular opening at club level and the great mass of theory is a daunting prospect for the tournament player having to face it. This book seeks to offer a complete repertoire against every variation of the defence, together with an alternative line for White where the recommended move leads to particularly sharp play. Thus, players of different styles should be able to face the Sicilian with confidence. By basing the material on 31 key selected games, the author develops an understanding of the attacking plans for White and the importance of different move orders. Balcancan Soundtrack

Kiril Dzajkovski - Balcancan Soundtrack
Soundtrack, Balkan Folk | Macedonia | 2005 | MP3 | CBR 192 kbps | 52,6 MB

Soundtrack for movie Balcancan made by Kiril Dzajkovski with guest performers like Pizzicato Brass Orchestra and Vlada Divljan.

The score for Balkancan, composed by Kiril Dzhajkovski, captures the ironic, humorous, and yet at moments tragic and elegiac atmosphere of the film. In recent years the composer has proven to be a truly prolific artist. Although Kiril's background is in electronic music, his work has seen him moving more lately towards contemporary classical, where his interest lies in music for films and theatre. The soundtrack for Balkancan is a beautiful mixture of contemporary sounds and Middle Eastern-laced aesthetics and influences. The music is mostly orchestral, using lush harmonies that remind me of Zorn’s Bar Kokhba, but infused with a healthy dose of humour.

What's really intriguing about this soundtrack are the various instrumental backdrops for the film: the densely arranged, yet infectious opener “Monte Union“, the Morricone-inspired track “Bar-Bari“, the funky “The Legend of Trendafil Karanfilov.“ There are fireworks, too, such as the gypsy brass tunes (performed by the Pizzicato Orchestra), where the band takes the main theme, mashes it up, and runs with it on the heels of their trumpets. Joining for this endeavor is the band Project Zlust, which broadens the spectrum of Kiril's compositions with arrangements for strings, percussion, sax, guitars, and clarinet. There is a special appearance by Kiril’s old collaborator from the Apparatchiks project, Vlada Divljan, who sings on the closing track, “Baba Zumbula” (a big hit in Macedonia and Serbia).

The album is consistently impressive, and in addition to the aforementioned tunes, the highlights also include “Santino’s Coming,” “Good Night, Bro,” and ”Finding El Dorado.” Even though Balkancan is not as striking as his previous work on Dust, Kiril’s genius as both composer and arranger is nevertheless in full evidence, and this recording is clearly one of his best efforts to date.

W.A. Mozart - Violin Concertos 2 & 4, Sinfonia concertante - Maxim Vengerov
APE (EAC) & CUE | Covers | DDD | 78:52 | 328 MB | RS

Recorded at Henry Wood Hall, London and Salle Métropole, Lausanne, 2006

"I had been making a special study of Mozart for some time, and one of the things I became especially keen on was the idea of turning the clock back and approaching the violin concerto's from the perspective of Mozart's early operatic music. I discovered pre-echoes of the concertos in many of his operatic arias, especially in La finta giardiniera." [Maxim Vengerov]
To this end Vengerov spent some time working with his friend Cecilia Bartoli, trying as far as possible to forget that he was playing the violin and imagining instead that he was, in a sense, 'singing' the solo lines. "We even went as far as to consider certain intervals that are perfectly straightforward on the violin but are actually quite difficult for the voice - so I had to learn not to make it sound too easy."

Tribes, Vibes And Scribes 1993

Incognito - Tribes, Vibes And Scribes 1993
Mp3 | Jazzfunk | 192 Kbps | 70.2 Mb

Incognito's third album nods to the influences that ground their jazz-funk-and-soul jams. The 11-member band adds a Latin feel to a snazzy cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," while "Magnetic Ocean" has a Weather Report-in-ballad-mode vibe. "Change" combines Maysa Leak's Chaka Khan-like power with sweeping Soul II Soul-ish strings, and "Need to Know" gives props to Roy Ayers (check the clavinet) and Rick James (horn section). The band is at its best showcasing Leak or featuring soloists, as on "Colibri" and the Mandrill-ish "Closer to the Feeling." Still, some attempts fall flat, like the syrupy "L'Arc en Ciel de Miles" that's more Chuck Mangione than Prince of Darkness. This one's for smooth-jazz aficionados; Brit-funk fans should check the band's later fare.

Otis Spann Is the Blues (1960)

Otis Spann - Otis Spann Is the Blues (1960)
MP3 | 192Kbps | RS.com | 64mb
Genre: Blues

Amazon.com:

There is great historical significance to this 1960 record: not only was it the first solo album ever recorded by the great pianist Otis Spann, it was also the first album ever recorded for Nat Hentoff's short-lived but fruitful Candid label. However, the music within is anything but a mere footnote. Hentoff's philosophy was to let the artist's true musical nature come through in the studio, and his laissez-faire production style bore great results. For his debut, Spann employed only Robert Lockwood Jr. as his musical support, and the result is a pared-down, passionate, triumphant set that sheds light on Spann as a full- bodied vocalist as well as a pianist.

The Mississippi-born Spann grew under the tutelage of Big Maceo and mastered the pounding barrelhouse piano style that Maceo brought with him to Chicago. Spann adapted this fierce, urgent style to the burgeoning electric small-band approach that was taking Chicago by storm, and he eventually became an integral element of Muddy Waters's peak ensemble. Here, with only Lockwood's guitar behind him, Spann is free to indulge in his florid runs and pulsing two-handed rhythmic attack, exploring the turf that connects the barrelhouse of his youth with the modern Chicago style. --Marc Greilsamer
