"I had been making a special study of Mozart for some time, and one of the things I became especially keen on was the idea of turning the clock back and approaching the violin concerto's from the perspective of Mozart's early operatic music. I discovered pre-echoes of the concertos in many of his operatic arias, especially in La finta giardiniera." [Maxim Vengerov]
To this end Vengerov spent some time working with his friend Cecilia Bartoli, trying as far as possible to forget that he was playing the violin and imagining instead that he was, in a sense, 'singing' the solo lines. "We even went as far as to consider certain intervals that are perfectly straightforward on the violin but are actually quite difficult for the voice - so I had to learn not to make it sound too easy."
