Software Testing Techniques 2E

Every professional and commercial software development organization spends a great deal of time in the testing and validation of their software. The testing process, driven either by legal or financial requirements, can be expensive and may thwart the planned deployment of the application. Many studies indicate that the testing process can even take three times as long as the actual coding itself. Indeed, software development done under the ISO 9000 or FDA auspices can be extremely time intensive.

This book gives a lengthy and fairly comprehensive overview of software testing that emphasizes formal models for testing. In the introduction, the author gives a general overview of the testing process and the reasons and goals for testing. He carefully distinguishes between testing and debugging, and advocates these as separate activities. Testing according to the author is done to find bugs; whereas debugging is done to find the origin of the bugs and fix them. The author characterizes testing as either functional or structural. Functional testing treats the program from the user's point of view, with inputs given to the program, and then the outputs are checked for conformance to a specified reference. Structural testing examines how the program is implemented, in terms of programming style, design, etc. The notion of an oracle is defined as any program or process that specifies the expected outcome of a collection of tests. The author clearly identifies and characterizes the different types of tests that arise in development organizations, such as unit testing, regression testing, stress testing, and integration testing.

In chapter 2, the author classifies the different types of bugs that could arise in program development. Bugs are classified according to functional, structural, data, coding, system, and design and test bugs. He stresses the need to not have a religious attitude about bugs, namely that all software will have them to some degree, and therefore it is the quality measure of the software that is important in deploying the application. If a minor bug requires a major software rewrite for example, it would not be advantageous to fix this bug.

Chapter 3 takes up the notion of path testing, which, according to the author, is based on the use of the program's flow control. The tester selects a set of test paths through the program with the goal of executing every statement and branch of the program at least once. The author summarizes well the flowgraph and process block techniques used to implement path testing.

In chapter 4, the author introduces the concept of a transaction flow as a representation of a system's processing. The flowgraphs developed in chapter 3 are used here to create a transaction flowgraph for functional testing. The transaction flow representation gives a way to model the system's behavior. The author's treatment here is very detailed, and he gives several useful tips on how to conduct this kind of testing.

The next chapter covers the topic of data-flow testing, where again flowgraphs are used, but this time the focus is on exploring the things that can happen to data. Data objects should be initialized prior to program execution, and selecting paths to insure this is the goal of data testing. The author does a good job of defining and characterizing data anomalies, and the strategies employed in static and dynamic anomaly detection. This is followed by a good overview of domain testing in chapter 6. This kind of testing, more mathematical in nature than others, attempts to test whether the inputs to programs are fulfilling some prior classification or specification. The author uses concepts from vector spaces and convex geometry to describe domain testing.

In chapter 7, several attempts are discussed to quantify program complexity, such as Halstead's metrics and token counts. This chapter is somewhat more theoretical at first glance, but a lot of these ideas have found practical application in development, particularly the measures for subroutine nesting. This is followed in the next two chapters by more abstract discussion involving paths, regular expression, and syntax testing. The discussion however is useful, for it trains the reader about how to think about a program in more general, linguistic terms. Such thinking is always useful when attempting to show a particular program is acting in ways other than that which it was designed for.

Logic-based testing, via Boolean algebra, is the topic of chapter 10. The author uses Karnaugh-Veitch charts to reduce the algebraic manipulations to a useful graphical representation. Finite-state machines, so useful in all areas of software engineering, are the topic of chapter 11. The concepts are presented very effectively by the author, and the reader should take away an appreciation of how these constructions are employed in software testing.

The next chapter reads like one straight out of a book on discrete geometry, wherein graph matrices are employed to give matrix representations in software. Linked lists are used to represent the graphs in a computer, and it is shown how testing problems can be represented as a graph problem.

The last chapter discusses how to implement software testing based on the strategies discussed in the book. The three-phase test scenario is described, namely unit, integration, and system testing. An overview of commercial testing tools is also given, with CASE mentioned, but the author chooses not to review the actual packages, citing the dynamic nature of the commercial situation. However he does give a useful discussion of the different characteristics of current testing tools.

On October 23, 2006 an album called Tell me about America took its place on the shelves of the Athenian record stores. On its cover a teenaged girl with a vintage look straight from the 50s in a Humphrey Bogart movie style was kind of telling you that you’re about to listen something entirely new, while the Klik Records sign was a clear promise of quality. In the 74 minutes of clean-cut musical pleasure that were following the FedEx job opportunity you were already convinced that you had not just bought a great CD but also a trip to New Yorks’ most luxury hot spots.

The album has been selling a lot since then in Greece and overseas and songs like Mrs Daisy May, Battery Calm and Girl One Day are always in the play lists of many of the country’s sophisticated radio stations. At the info side of one of the most flawless jazzy–freestyle albums we’ve seen in the last years we read the name of the producer: Mr. Sunset Blvd.

George Doudos (Sunset Blvd) started in 1995 with the Delay Exhibition project, while three years later he recorded Spike Tee (Morcheeba, Bomb the Bass) with Michael Blake of the American Alphabet Soup. In 2000 he collaborated with Rootsman and the same year he released Little with J-Walk from Grandcentral Records. In June 2005 he recorded his first personal album Versions of Truth and some time later he kicked off the project by which he’s mostly known until now: Sunset Blvd.

Lost somewhere between the offices of his magazine in Thessaloniki and his personal studio, he is always after perfection in his creative work and aesthetic quality in everything he does. Drinking his coffee always black and being a dear buddy of Marlboro’s cowboy, he has learnt to live his life exactly as likes, keeping a distance from labels that surround him.

Сначала его музыка была полностью инструментальной, затем треки Адамсона стали озвучивать такие выдающиеся вокалисты, как Ник Кейв, Билли Маккензи, Джарвис Кокер и, наконец, маэстро запел сам. “Pensavo alle musiche che ho incontrato, passate e recenti, - spiega Nick - e come spesso, quando non le senti piu per un po’ di tempo, ti passano di mente, cosi mi è venuta la voglia di rispolverare la memoria e metterle, raccoglierle in questo cofanetto speciale. Penso che quello che ho fatto con le mie compilation negli anni è stato di unire musiche che toccano, entrano sotto la pelle, lasciano qualcosa nel ipod della memoria ! Musiche senza tempo, musiche fatte da musicisti per esprimere questa sublime arte che amo, la musica.

Nel primo disco “Yesterday”, brani del passato lontano si intrecciano con quelli del passato recente: pezzi come “Real Love” degli Driza Bone, “Take 5” nella versione fatta da Grover Washington Jr, e “Ascension” di Maxwell si uniscono a “Down On My Knees” di Ayo, a “Everybody gente” di Carlinhos Brown e a “I Can Explain” di Rachell Ferrell.

Il cd “Today” è un po più groovy e attuale, qualcosa di nuovo con “The JuJu Orchestra” , “What is Hip” con le voce di Terry Callier e Carolin Leonhart , poi c’e il sound solare degli Svedesi Koop,alcuni artisti italiani come Mario Biondi e Sergio Cammariere, il remix di Nina Simone in “The Look Of Love”, il sound di “Raw Artistic Soul” del percussionista Phil Kullmann.

Il cd “Tonight” è aperto da “Patu Patu Patu”” , una composizione di Nick incisa insieme a due musicisti, marito e moglie, di New Orleans, Kim Prevoste e Bill Solley.
Le altre musiche in questo volume spaziano dal brano di John Mayer a Till Bronner, da Amalia Gre, a Aaron Neville con Chaka Chan in un classico del soul, poi Bill Withers, Pat Metheny Charlie Haden,Alison Moyet e Jamiroquai.

Nick The NightFly ha introdotto e conduce da piu’ di 16 anni Monte Carlo Nights il primo programma radiofonico di nuove musiche e tendenze, la notte in Italia. Nick è nato a Glasgow, in Scozia, ma vive in Italia dal 1982. Alla radio ha ospitato e intervistato molti personaggi di grande prestigio come: Pat Metheny, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Andreas Vollenweider, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brian Eno, Gino Vanelli, David Sylvian, Miriam Makeba, Caetano Veloso, Enya, Donald Fagen, Wayne Shorter, Pino Daniele, Deep Forest, Mark Knopfler, Seal, Battiato, Ivano Fossati e tanti altri.

Well, that awkward goth phase didn't last long! With all the impatience of an ADD-riddled teen rebel, Avril Lavigne ditched the gloomy faзade of her sophomore Under My Skin and dove back into the well-scrubbed mosh pit for her third album, The Best Damn Thing. Frankly, the change in pace comes as a bit of a relief. The serious Avril on Under My Skin never felt genuine - the shift from the exuberance of "Sk8er Boi" to the meandering ruminations of "Don't Tell Me" and "My Happy Ending" seemed sudden and forced, a misguided attempt to prove that Lavigne was a serious songwriter - so as soon as The Best Damn Thing opens with the bright bubblegum blast of "Girlfriend" and its cheerleader chant, everything within Avril's world seems right again. If anything, this third album feels even more adolescent than her aggressively catchy-n-shallow debut, Let Go, perhaps because this is an album where Avril is allowed to run wild. She can curse, spit, and strut to her heart's content, she can taunt her rivals and steal their boyfriends, then bitch out the boy for not understanding her once he belongs to her. She impatiently rushes through the power ballads - there are only three of them, all impeccable melodic anthems designed to keep the crossover adult audience Let Go won, all better than their equivalents on Under My Skin - because she can't wait to get back and raise hell like the spoiled brat that she's thrilled to be. Avril swears like she's just discovered profanity, cheerfully spitting out four-letter words (and their compounds) with glee, but everything she does here she does with unrestrained glee. She truly believes she's the best damn thing you've ever seen, she knows it's all about her - or, as she shouts on "I Don't Have to Try," "I wear the pants!" - and if you don't agree, she knows you're wrong and you can go to hell (actually, she'd probably say something a lot stronger). This sense of entitlement will surely rankle anybody who's just a little bit older than Avril's 22 years, who will also find that the perennial Lavigne complaint holds: she ain't no punk, she's a brat that any grizzled old punk will want to beat with a baseball bat. (How do you know if you're one of the old guys? If you recognize the chorus of "Girlfriend" as a total lift from the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," you're an old guy, even if you're 20.) But The Best Damn Thing wasn't made for them, nor was it made with any sense (or even regard) for the past: it was made to exist totally in the moment, in a time when a moment speeds by faster than light. And, frankly, that's what good about The Best Damn Thing: it's as exuberant, irreverent, and exciting as any other bubblegum pop, defiantly silly and shallow, but also deliriously hooky. If Lavigne didn't have the hooks - if neither "Girlfriend" nor the title track weren't driven by cheerleader chants, if "Everything Back But You" didn't snarl like prime Green Day, if "I Can Do Better" didn't soar on its chorus - her snotty attitude would be unbearable, but these are terrific, addictive pop songs that are harder and tougher yet feel fresher and lighter than her big hits from Let Go. True, this is far from deep, but Under My Skin proved that a deep Avril is a dull Avril. The Best Damn Thing, in contrast, builds on every one of her bratty strengths, which makes for ridiculously catchy pop - the kind of music that provides a soundtrack for teens and guilty pleasures for everyone else. Klemperer and Mahler:
In 1905 he met Gustav Mahler while conducting the off-stage brass at a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, 'Resurrection'. The two became friends, and Klemperer became conductor at the German Opera in Prague in 1907 on Mahler's recommendation. Mahler wrote a short testimonial, recommending Klemperer, on a small card which Klemperer kept for the rest of his life. (from Wiki)
